‘Wonderland’ is a new collection of digital paintings – contemporary portraits of young Welsh girls aged between ten and thirteen years old. Commonly referred to as ‘tweenagers’, these girls occupy the territory between child and not-child. As a body of work, the portraits aim to capture and communicate the boundaries of childhood, a precarious hinterland where new complex emotions collide with experience and autonomy.
‘Wonderland’ is a liminal space – a place between what was and what will be, a place where all sense and sensation of being in the world is in flux. Shifts in identity arise from rooted-ness and slippage, identification and estrangement, familiarity and alienation. Above all it is the threshold of transformation, a place of becoming.
